
Get a visa on behalf of a client
If you are placing candidates who are not New Zealand citizens or residents, they are considered migrant workers and must hold the correct work rights before they can start employment.
These candidates may already be in New Zealand with a valid visa, or they may be offshore and require a visa to enter the country. Regardless of their location, they must go through the immigration process to obtain the appropriate permission to work.
Placing Onshore Candidates
Migrant workers already in New Zealand typically hold either:

a restricted (employer-assisted) visa, or
-
an open work visa.
Restricted visas are tied to a specific employer, job, and location. A candidate holding this type of visa cannot start work for a new employer until Immigration New Zealand approves a new visa or a variation of conditions. Importantly, they must first receive a genuine job offer from your client—work visa applications cannot be submitted without a signed employment agreement.
It is a common misconception that candidates must get the visa before securing the job. In reality, the visa application follows the job offer.

Candidates on open work visas (such as partnership work visas, post-study work visas, or working holiday visas) are free to work for any employer in almost any role. In these cases, no additional visa process is required for placement.
