What Happens After Approval In Principle?

At last, we call to inform you that your residence application has been approved! However, this is not the final step; in most cases, this initial approval is only an "Approval in Principle."

Change Of Circumstances

Please avoid any unnecessary delays in obtaining your visas and, if you are overseas, entering New Zealand.

Your grant of residence is not finalized until you have entered New Zealand. Until then:

  • You must inform Immigration New Zealand of any relevant changes in your circumstances.

  • Changes in your circumstances could affect your eligibility and may result in your visa being canceled.

Useful Information

The NZIHS immigration advisers and experts take away the stress and worry of navigating the complex world of New Zealand Visitor visas, policies, and immigration.

Residence Visa

You still need to have your resident visa issued, which may take some time depending on the remaining requirements you need to fulfill.

If you are an investor, you will typically need to provide proof of transferring nominated funds through the banking system and making the investment. You have up to 12 months to complete this step.

In some cases, additional documentation may be required before the visa is issued. If your Resident Visa is issued while you are overseas, it will be valid for entry for 12 months from the date of issue.

Although you have 12 months to arrive in New Zealand to activate your residence status, we encourage you to travel as soon as possible.

If your circumstances change before your arrival in New Zealand and these changes are not declared and cleared by Immigration New Zealand, it could lead to complications at the border or in future applications. Take advice and avoid delays.

If Your Circumstances Change

Every situation is unique. If any change in personal circumstances occurs before your resident visa is activated—either by arriving in New Zealand for the first time or while the visa is issued when already in New Zealand—you must seek advice.

Any change that could impact the visa decision must be considered. This includes changes to your job offer, new health or character issues, or even obtaining a new passport.

Consult with a licensed immigration adviser who can guide you on the appropriate next steps.

General Comments

While you may not anticipate any issues, if something does go wrong, it could derail your plans.

Please do not delay in completing these final steps after receiving Approval in Principle.
